Salty Watermelon? / 塩スイカ?

Quick question.  Do you eat watermelon?  If so, do you put salt to it when eating it?

Here, even though not everyone does, I think I can say it’s popular to put salt to watermelon when eating it (If any Japanese are reading this posting and think I’m wrong, correct me! lol).  It makes the watermelon sweeter. :)  The reason why I’m asking this is because the other day my Australian friend living in Japan found this Pepsi “Salty Watermelon” and told me “It’s crazy!”
I tried it.  I thought it was OK (I wouldn’t say it was good though), but she thought this was wrong. lol  By the way, she eats a peach with skin, and that’s wrong with me.  It’s like eating someone’s hairy leg. lol

It’s always so much fun to see my country in her Australian/non-Japanese point of view because often many things I think normal or popular are totally strange for her while what I think boring can be super cool for her! :D  I love when she says, “Aya, look what I found!” :)

    1. Please do! :D Oh, but please don't put a lot. Just a little bit is enough. Her husband (also Australian) tried this Salty Watermelon Pepsi and made the same comment, "Wrong!". lol That Pepsi wasn't so good, but putting salt to watermelon IS nice. ;)

  2. We don't eat watermelons with salt in Poland. But my friend was visited by some Mexican and she told me they ate watermelon with salt. I was shocked to hear it. She said she tried it and liked more than plain watermelon. But it still seems weird to me.
Haha, hairy leg. I eat peaches with skin too:)
Also here in Poland people sometimes add sugar to strawberries, raspberries or grapefruits. I don't do that because because I like to feel fruits 'pure' taste.
    This is interesting post:D

    1. Thanks for following my blog (btw I like your blog a lot, too!). So Mexicans eat watermelon with salt. Good to hear because I can now have another support for our "taste" and tell that to my Australian friend. :D

REALLY?! You eat peaches with skin? Oh, so now it's not that strange anymore, I guess. :D Very interesting. I wonder if our peaches have thicker skin than peaches you eat in Poland, oh but then my Australian friend eats Japanese peaches with skin so maybe it's not that different *mumbling*. I haven't tried it with the skin, but now maybe I should try to see if it's OK or is actually like a hairy leg. lol

  3. I put sugar on watermelon. ^^; Although it doesn't surprise me to read you add salt. I got salted mango for my mom from the Asian supermarket and she had this "really, salt?!" look on her face, but she loved it. ^^

    1. Sugar on watermelon? Wow, never tried it, but if the purpose of doing that is the same as putting salt to watermelon (to make it sweeter), then I must try it! Salted mango is new to me as well, but sounds good! I should look for one! Thanks for letting me know! :)

  4. In the US, people in the south are known for putting salt on watermelon. My mom does this, and I think it's disgusting! She also puts peaches in her cottage cheese (without the skin), and all sorts of other weird things. She's from the south, but also spent half of her childhood in Japan. So I'll have to ask her about that.

And Mexican sweets are different than any other I've tasted. They're usually some kind of fruit flavor but with salt or spice/pepper added. YUCK!

    1. If your mom spent her childhood in Japan, maybe that's the reason why she puts salt on watermelon. Here, watermelon is a good snack for children in summer time. :)

Hahaha, fluit with spice/pepper added sounds really different! I'd love to try them though! :D
