In my previous posting, I told you
that my American friend just arrived in Japan tasted our popular food “konnyaku”
that he thought awful. Well, it’s not
awful. You just have to cook it before you
eat it, but he ate it raw. lol
Anyway, after writing that posting, I
remembered how I felt when I first tasted “vegemite”. It’s a dark brown Australian food paste (for
further info. please check here), and according to my Australian friend it’s a
popular food in Australia. One day she
served this vegemite on a piece of toast for me, and I
ate. I couldn’t figure out what just happened to my tongue! It was…hmm…sour-bitter-sour kind of taste
(sorry, couldn’t find the right words), and I hadn’t tasted such taste before
so was really surprised. I tasted it
again, and this time it was OK because I knew “that” taste was coming. :)
It's always such a fun to meet the brand new food, and I LOVE tasting new food. And I love asking about food in my letters. :) How about you? Do you like trying new food? Did you taste something absolutely new to you lately?

I like trying new things but as I don't eat red meat and poultry, my options are limited. I didn't try anything new or exotic lately though. But I remember my penpals sending me some really weird sweets that didn't taste like sweets at all. Even though I might have not liked the taste I was happy I could try them. I tried some Japanese sweets too:)
ReplyDeleteHahaha, once my American friend sent me something called "licorice", and it was a big surprise for me! My first impression about that candy was ... "chewing a black rubber tire" lol Have you tried it?
DeleteYes, but I tried licorice from Finland. It's called Salmiakki and it's salty! It's really awful:P But I had fun looking at reactions of my friends when I gave them some. They spilled it away and one friend even cursed me, LOL. It's definitelly NOT for Polish tongues:P
Delete
DeleteI once tried sea snails. I was really scared at first because I had to get a toothpick and get the snail out from it's shell. But in the end they tasted like chicken breast. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the image you alrady have really affects on new food. Sea snails are popular here, but I remember that it was kind of a challenge for me to try that for the first time! lol
DeleteI absolutely love tasting new dishes from different cuisines.Even though I am a vegetarian, I feel there are plenty of opportunities for me to taste in vegetarian selection.I came to know about Vegemite from Masterchef Australia and certainly didn't know about it till I saw that in the show.
ReplyDeleteOrganic food is getting popular over here in Japan and I think vegetarian food as well. :) I'm surprised how many variety vegetarian dishes are, and even though I'm not a vegetarian, I enjoy them. :)
Delete
「絶対に口にしない」食べた後だと分かります(笑)なんとも言えない味で、まぁこういうもんだと言われれば食べられなくもないけど、あまり好んで食べたい味でもなかったです(^^;
